Staunton Music Festival

For sixteen years the Staunton Music Festival has been bringing an international cadre of musicians to town in a consortium of concerts held both day and night.

What a delight for our small city to be host to this wide asortment of chamber music available in venues throughout the city, including free concerts at Noon each day. That is the truly special thing about this yearly summer event — that a good number of the concerts are free of charge, making it a week of music that is accessible-to-all.

Lofty and lively

The full range of offerings at the SMF is truly astounding — from solo concerts to small ensembles, full orchestras to vocal choirs, from small settings to large venues.

And we in Staunton get to show off some of our special settings, such as organ music played on the Taylor & Boody organ at Trinity Episcopal Church, which is seated in a nave surrounded by 12 authentic Tifffany windows.  Or concerts held in the Blackfriars Playhouse, the world's only rereation of Shakespeare's original indoor theater. All of this — and most of the other SMF events, are in walkable distance from the Frederick House and other downtown Staunton places.

Full schedule

Concertgoers can find a full schedule of events on the Staunton Music Festival's website and follow news and happenings with the organization year round (especially to get that early news for next year's event) by following their Facebook page.

If all this wasn't enough, this year marks the last year of The Bach Project, an effort by SMF artisit director Carsten Schmidtto bring all of J.S. Bach's music to Staunton in a variety of ways. This is a not-to-be-missed historic opportunity with truly wonderful music and arrangements.

As for us, imagine what it's like to live in this glorious small city tucked away in the mountain valley of Virginia and yet ensconced in culture the likes of which is seen in an international cityh many times its size? We'd take our own vacation this summer to far-flung locales if we didn't have so much to choose from right out our back door!
